In the central part of the North American continent, from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, there was a vast sea of grass so high that you could hide a man on horseback.

In dry pampas
Except huge Amazon River basin, covered in dense tropical forest, vast plains that are called pampas of South America, are poor in high vegetation, with little rainfall and climate which, from warm south to north becomes colder , to the frozen Patagonia.
Also called jarumi, Great Anteater is a big strange looking animal which is around eight feet long, including the tail, and about two feet high.it has elongated head with a cylindrical curved down Muzzle, and very small eyes and ears.Mouth are just a round hole through which it pushes long, cylindrical and limber tongue.Front paws are shorter than the hind but much stronger and equipped with long and sharp nails, which are so sharp that the animal while walking must keep them twisted inward and relies on the outer edge of the paws. When in danger, the great anteater tries to run away, but if it is forced to battle, it stops, relying on its hind paws and lifting itself threatening with its paws, witch can deadly hurt the attacker.
In spring, the female brings to the world an offspring, that she breastfeeds for long time and never leaves alone.When forced to go in search of food, she lifts him on her back and carries him with herself.Since it likes it, even when it gets big and strong it prefers to travel on its mother's back than to bother walking.
Interesting thing : with nails of his paws, anteater breaks walls of anthills getting into that gap with his tongue , about 60 inches long, covered with sticky saliva on which remain glued insects which it feeds .

Similar to African ostrich , but smaller, Rhea reaches a height of 1.7m. Male lays on eggs forcing to leave all those that come close to him, even females that want to lay another egg in the the same nest! Unable to fly, rhea is a very fast runner. Its gray plumage with green trace fits it to drown in the atmosphere.

Predator in the pampas is Jaguarundi. It has a long tail and a dark color. It lives lonely, especially at night hunting for small mammals on the the surrounding territory.When the male and the hen jaguarundi mate they can not be separated: they go hunting together and with love together raise their young.

Armadillo is an unusual mammal covered with protective shields.eat everything a little, small animals and insects, but also roots and berries.Nocturnal animal armadillo can completely bury himself for a few minutes, thanks to the its nails on the front paws.It dig underground dens small depth but long up to 7 meters in the bottom it makes its nest, covered with leaves.There female brings into the world four youngsters.

African buffalo, brown-black color is considered to be the most dangerous animal in Africa, along with the hippo.Namely, if wounded or perceives a threat to himself or to its young, it do not hesitate to chase the attacker and kill him with its powerful horns.And the lion is trying to avoid it, because the outcome of the battle is uncertain.Lion prefers to choose for the target young ones that have moved away from the herd, or old and sick individuals, who are unable to fight.

During the hot daylight hours buffalo prefers to remain in the shadow of the growing season. Only at dusk, when the temperature drops, it moves to pastures, where it spends the night eating grass.Groups of buffaloes usually are made out of few hundred individuals, but could also be larger. They like to take baths in pools of water to get rid of parasites and to be refreshed.Then they roll in the mud, which helps them to ward off pesky insects.

The male impala can reach 90kg. This animal lives in shrubby steppes of southern and western Africa. When the herd moves, it is led by the older female while one male is at the rear of the group. These migrations are frequent during shortage of water, which is very important for the Impala as they have to drink every day.
Impala is a very skilled jumper: it can jump 10 meters in range and 3 meters in height. |
